Having a pet cat is wonderful. But did you know it can be even more fulfilling? Learning how to truly communicate with your cat will strengthen the bond between you beyond you wildest imagination. Here are a few principles to help you feel like you can read your cat's mind.
1. Meowing
Much like a mother knows the meaning of her baby's different cries, a cat lover can learn the difference between his kitty's meows. Each cat is individual, so the only way to really understand what he means when he meows is to pay close attention. When a cat is nervous, for example, he may meow with short, quick sounds. Oftentimes, his meows will be longer and more sustained when he is feeling relaxed and happy. But your cat may or may not follow this pattern. Begin to notice his behavior when he is meowing, and you will soon learn to tell what his distinctive meow patterns mean.
2. Purring
Undoubtedly, you already know that your cat purrs when he is feeling happy and content. Many a cat owner first fell in love when holding a purring cat on their lap. But have you noticed that your cat purrs at other times, too? Have you just passed it off as odd, or have you really paid attention to the reason behind it? Cats are the only ones in the animal kingdom who make this distinctive sound, and if you start to listen, you may notice that your cat also purrs when he is nervous, uneasy, or even in pain.
These are just a few ways you can begin to communicate with your cat. As you can see, each cat is as individual as its owner. You will need to pay close attention and take note of your own cat's patterns to learn to truly communicate. When you do, you will find that living with your cat is a most rewarding experience.
